Seminar at Madras Christian College

Centre for Traditional Medicine and Research, a Chennai based NGO organized a seminar on the topic 'Admirable ISM drugs and Formulations' on 25th May 2012 at Madras Christian College. Dr. T.Thirunarayanan Secretary of CTMR said about 60 Siddha, Ayurveda physicians, Botanist, Research Scholars participated in the seminar which looked critically at the rationale of Tradional Indian System of Medicine formulations

Dr.K.Manikavasagam, director National Institute of Siddha, delivered the Inaugural address and stressed the need for better understanding on the pharmaceutics of Traditional medicine and this seminar is in that direction. He recalled the collaborations with CTMR in various activities including establishment of Medicinal Plant Garden and Museum in the Institute.

Dr.D.Narasimhan of the Centre for Floristic studies Madras Christian College in his presidential address highlighted how Siddha and Botany are interdependent particularly as most drugs are from plant sources and how ethonobotany has emerged as an important area for development of low cost drugs for many ailments.

The Lead speaker was Vaidya. S.Usman Ali, with over 50 years in the field of ISM pharmacognosy, pharmaceutics and ISM pharmacology who highlighted the significance of certain ingredients in formulations which enhance bioavailability of drugs or prepare the site of action in the system, which greatly reduce the quantam of drug required per dose.

Dr.S.Rajkumar highlighted the Problem of Iron deficiency anemia and explained how different Iron based formulations of Siddha medicine address different associated clinical conditions.

Participants in their feedback mentioned that it was a very informative seminar and wished more patronage for this kind of analytical debates.

Admirable ISM drugs and Formulations

One would wonder why so many ingredients are present in one Siddha/ Ayurveda formulations. What kind of drug-drug interaction happens, is the pharmacological action of the ingredients add up for a better efficacy or are they added to neutralize the undesired effects of certain essential ingredients. Does the combinations made to address multiple problems that co-exist. What is the rationale behind the level of incorporation of each ingredient. In order to address all this questions CTMR decided to have a seminar on the topic 'Admirable ISM drugs and Formulations' on 25th May 2012 at Madras Christian College. About 100 ISM physicians are expected to participate in the Workshop. The Lead speaker will be Vaidya. S.Usman Ali -, with over 50 years in the field of ISM pharmacognosy, pharmaceutics and ISM pharmacology.
